Common Questions

Who needs a TSSA EDM certificate?

Any person working on elevating devices where a certificate or training is mandated by the TSSA act and regulations. Per Ontario Regulation 222/01, no person shall work on an elevating device as a mechanic without first obtaining a certificate from the director.

When must I renew my EDM certificate?

Certificates renew every two years. The renewal date is generally based on your birth date — your certificate expires on the second anniversary of the holder's date of birth after it is issued (O. Reg. 222/01, s. 8).

Where do I send my CE certificate to TSSA?

Email or mail your PDF completion certificate to: examinationandcertification@tssa.org

What happens if I'm late renewing?

Per O. Reg. 222/01 s. 5(4), if you fail to renew before expiry, you cannot work as a mechanic after the expiry date but may apply to the director for renewal. If more than 12 months have passed since expiry, your application is treated as a new certificate application under section 4.

Who can provide continuing education training?

Training must be provided by a TSSA-accredited training provider. Elevator Educators / EDM Online Continuing Education is an accredited TSSA provider for both online/remote and classroom programs.

Do I need formal schooling for TSSA EDM-A certification?

Trade exemption examinations are available through community colleges for candidates evaluated through the Out of Province/Assessment process. Only applicants directed in writing by TSSA may complete exemption examinations. Others must complete formal in-class training through accredited providers. The elevating devices program includes 25 examinations totaling approximately 12 hours.

What if I lost my certificate or haven't renewed in over a year?

You'll need to submit an "Application for an Ontario Certificate of Qualification as an Elevating Devices Mechanic." TSSA provides challenge/reinstatement process documents for expired EDM certificates across all classifications (A-F and T).

What materials are permitted during examinations?
  • Technical Standards and Safety Act
  • Elevating Devices Regulations 222/01 and 209/01
  • Code Adoption Document
  • ASME A17.1 / CSA B44 Safety Code for Elevators
  • CSA B311 Safety Code for Manlifts
  • CSA B355 Lifts for Persons with Physical Disabilities
  • Canadian / Ontario Electrical Safety Code
